Riddles at the Deep End

The pool party at Tyler's house was supposed to be legendary, but Maya stood by the fence in her oversized t-shirt, heart running a marathon against her ribs. Everyone else was already in the water, laughing and splashing like they'd been best friends since kindergarten. Maya felt like she'd crash the vibe if she actually took off the cover-up.

Then she saw The Sphinx. That's what everyone called her — real name was Sasha, but she earned the nickname last year when she'd started sitting by the pool during lunch, mysterious and unreadable, like she knew secrets about everyone. Sasha wasn't swimming. She was perched on the diving board like it was a throne, watching everything with those intense eyes that made you feel exposed.

Maya realized Sasha was basically low-key spying on everyone, cataloging who hung out with whom, who was flirting with who. The social hierarchy laid bare.

Their eyes met. Maya expected Sasha to look away, but instead she slid off the diving board and walked over, water dripping from her legs. "You're not swimming," Sasha stated. "Riddle me this: what's heavier — a gallon of water or a gallon of anxiety?"

Maya blinked. "What?"

"Exactly." Sasha's mouth curved into something almost like a smile. "You're overthinking it. Nobody's watching you except me, and I'm just admiring your courage to show up in a t-shirt at a pool party. That's hardcore."

Maya found herself laughing despite the knot in her stomach. "Is that your thing? You just sit here being all sphinx-like, dropping riddles and calling people out?"

"Only when it counts." Sasha gestured to the water. "Jump in with me. The deep end's way more chill than standing out here overthinking everything."

And just like that, Maya took a breath and did it — stripped down to her swimsuit and jumped. The water shocked her system, washed away the overthinking, and when she surfaced, Sasha was there grinning like they'd just shared something massive.

"See?" Sasha said. "Sometimes you just gotta stop running and dive in."

Maya floated on her back, staring up at the sky, finally part of the legendary party instead of just watching from the edge. Sometimes sphinxes weren't about riddles and secrets. Sometimes they were just someone brave enough to call you out on your own fear.
