Riddle on the Court
Maya's knees literally shook as she gripped the padel racquet, her palms sweating through her grip. Tryouts for the school team had everyone talking — especially since Tyler "the Bull" Henderson was captain this year. His nickname wasn't just about his build; it was about how he charged through social situations, leaving everyone else in his wake.
"You're up, new girl," Tyler barked from across the court. His crew laughed on cue. Classic.
Maya stepped onto the court, her heartbeat doing something way too fast. She'd been playing padel at the community center since freshman year, but nobody here knew that. To them, she was just the quiet transfer student who sat in the back of pre-calc.
First serve. Perfect. Tyler's return came hard — of course — but Maya was ready. She'd studied his playing style for weeks, watching from the sidelines during lunch like a total stalker (okay, maybe not stalker, but definitely observant).
The rally built. Back and forth. The glass walls echoed every hit. Maya's mind went quiet, that rare focus she only found on the court. No overthinking. No anxiety about fitting in. Just instinct and muscle memory.
She won the point.
Tyler narrowed his eyes. "Not bad. But can you solve the sphinx?"
The what?
He nodded toward the far corner of the court. "Coach's challenge. Last year's team captains set it up. Nobody's beaten it since September."
A taped tennis ball sat on a small ledge near the ceiling, almost impossible to reach. The sphinx riddle of padel, apparently.
Maya sized it up. Everyone watched. This wasn't just about making the team anymore. It was about not being invisible.
Three bounces off the glass walls. A spin shot. The ball arced perfectly, knocked the tennis ball down, and landed exactly in the corner.
Dead silence.
Then Tyler grinned. "Alright, then. Welcome to the team."
Maya's phone buzzed in her bag — probably her mom wondering how tryouts went. But for once, she wasn't worrying about disappointing anyone. She'd found her place, on her own terms, one ridiculous riddle at a time.
