Riddle of the Sphinx
Maya Chen had perfected the art of invisibility at Northwood High. Sit in the back row, wear neutral colors, never volunteer. It had worked for two years. Until Mr. Henderson's mythology class announced the living museum project.
"You'll each portray a mythological figure," he said, already knowing who'd fight for Athena.
The new girl, Brianna, immediately claimed her spot as Athena with the confidence of someone who'd never been afraid in her life. When class president Jake grabbed Zeus, the social hierarchy settled like dust. Everyone knew their place.
Except Maya ended up with the Sphinx.
"Perfect," Brianna announced at lunch, her laugh sharp. "Because you're a riddle nobody wants to solve."
Her table exploded with laughter. Maya's face burned. This was why she stayed invisible.
The night of the living museum, Maya stood in her gold-trimmed costume while Brianna (in a store-bought toga) held court in the gymnasium center. Parents snapped photos. Jake posed with his papier-mâché lightning bolt like he'd invented the sky.
Then the storm knocked out the power.
Lightning flashed through the windows, turning everyone into ghosts for one split second. When the emergency lights flickered on, Brianna was screaming because her carefully straightened hair had somehow frizzed in the humidity. The gym went silent, then erupted with whispers.
Maya saw her opening.
She stepped onto the makeshift stage, spotlighted by someone's flashlight. "I have a riddle," she announced, surprised by how steady her voice sounded. "What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening?"
The whole gym turned toward her. Even Brianna stopped checking her hair.
"A person," Maya continued, meeting eyes across the room. "We crawl as babies, walk as adults, and need canes when we're old. But the real question is—why are we so obsessed with growing up when being young means you can still figure out who you're supposed to be?"
The silence stretched. Then Jake started clapping. Slowly at first, then harder. Someone else joined in. Within seconds, the whole gym was applauding.
Brianna rolled her eyes, but for once, nobody was looking.
Maya stepped down from the stage, heart racing like a storm in her chest. She'd always thought the Sphinx was just a monster who asked questions. But maybe the real power was in being the one who dared to speak up first.
She caught Jake's smile across the room. Tomorrow she'd probably go back to sitting in the back. But tonight, she didn't feel invisible at all.
