Riddle of the Lunch Table Pyramid

Maya's hair had other plans today. The humidity turned her carefully straightened locks into a frizzy halo, and now she looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Perfect for first day at Valley Ridge High.

The cafeteria operated like its own social pyramid. At the top sat the influencers—perfect hair, perfect outfits, perfect lives. Maya? She was somewhere in the basement level, probably near the recycled bins.

"You're the new girl, right?"

Maya looked up. A guy with artistic chaos hair and paint-stained fingers slid into the seat across from her.

"Yeah. I'm Maya."

"Leo. I'm the resident weirdo, which is apparently better than being invisible." He grinned. "What's with the notebook? You write?"

Maya clutched her sketchbook. "Sometimes."

"Cool. I paint. We should collaborate." Leo pointed at her tray. "By the way, you have—"

Spinach. Stuck in her teeth. From lunch.

Maya's face burned. She'd been talking to possibly the first person who'd acknowledged her existence all morning, and she'd had spinach in her teeth like a cartoon character.

Leo didn't laugh. Instead, he slid her a mirror from his bag. "Happens to everyone. Last week, I walked around with chocolate on my face for three periods."

The guy who sat by himself was being genuinely nice? This wasn't how the pyramid worked.

"Thanks," Maya said, cleaning it off. "You're, like, weirdly chill."

"Weirdly is my default setting." Leo leaned in. "So here's the thing about this school's social pyramid—it's actually just a bunch of insecure people pretending. The real power is being the sphinx."

"The sphinx?"

"The one who sees through everything. Who asks better questions than they answer." Leo winked. "Like: why does any of this matter when we could be making art instead?"

Maya's frizzy hair didn't feel so catastrophic anymore. Sometimes the worst moments—spinach teeth, bad hair days, sitting alone—became the best stories. She opened her sketchbook.

"So about that collaboration..."
