Riddle of the Friday Night Lights

sphinxzombielightning

Maya felt like a total zombie as she dragged herself through the double doors of the community center. Finals week had literally killed her soul, and now here she was at what was supposed to be the 'party of the semester.' The place was decked out for Jordan's escape-room-themed birthday - paper maché tombstones, glow-in-the-dark skeleton stickers, and a suspicious amount of dry ice fog.

"You good?" her best friend Chloe whispered, side-eyeing Maya's dead-eyed stare.

"Honestly? I'm running on three espressos and pure spite," Maya muttered, adjusting her oversized hoodie. "Why did I agree to this again?"

"Because Tyler's gonna be here, and you've been lowkey obsessed with him since October. Also, free pizza."

Before Maya could argue, Jordan's mom herded them into Room 3 for the first escape room challenge. A projector flickered on, revealing an ornate digital sphinx with glowing eyes.

"I am the Sphinx of Secrets," a dramatically theatrical voice announced. "Answer my riddle within five minutes, or remain trapped... in your awkwardness forever."

The room erupted in groans. Jordan's older sister had clearly gone overboard with the production value.

"Okay, here's the riddle," the Sphinx continued. "I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with lightning. What am I?"

Maya's brain, fogged by sleep deprivation, suddenly sparked. Something about the wording clicked - maybe it was the way Tyler's hand brushed hers when they both reached for the marker at the same time, or maybe it was just that her exhausted mind worked differently.

"An echo," she blurted out before anyone else could speak.

The Sphinx's eyes flashed green. "CORRECT. The doors shall open... after I finish my dramatic speech about how wisdom comes from unexpected places."

Tyler turned to her, genuinely impressed. "That was actually kind of genius."

Maya felt something shift - not lightning-exactly, but close. The zombie-fog lifted. Maybe tonight wouldn't be so terrible after all.

"Thanks," she managed, suddenly very aware that her hoodie had a coffee stain on the sleeve. "I watch a lot of riddle videos when I can't sleep."

"Same," Tyler said, and his smile was worth every espressos-fueled zombie moment of the past week.

Outside, real lightning cracked across the sky as the escape room door finally clicked open. Sometimes the hardest puzzles weren't the ones on screens - sometimes they were figuring out how to say the right thing at the right time. But tonight? She'd solved both.
