Riddle of the Cafeteria Sphinx

Maya's life had become one giant social riddle she couldn't solve. Freshman year at Northwood High was supposed to be her glow-up era, but instead she was stuck in the background of everyone else's TikTok moments.

The worst part? Lunch period. The cafeteria was like ancient Egypt—mysterious, slightly terrifying, and dominated by something that felt like a sphinx. That's what Maya and her best friend Priya called Skylar, the junior who sat at the center table with her perfectly curated friend group. Skylar had this unreadable expression, like she knew secrets about everyone. The Sphinx of Northwood. Pass her social test, or get eaten alive.

"You need a confidence boost," Priya said, sliding something across the table. "My mom's new vitamin routine. Cherry flavor. Supposed to make you, like, radiate main character energy."

Maya popped the vitamin gummy into her mouth. "This tastes like floor wax and hope."

"Exactly. That's the flavor of success."

What Maya didn't know: Skylar's sphinx vibe was completely manufactured. Inside, Skylar was stressing over AP Bio, her parents' divorce, and the fact that her Instagram aesthetic was crumbling under the weight of her actual anxiety. The sphinx mask was heavy.

The collision happened near the gym doors. Maya's golden retriever, Buster—she'd somehow convinced her mom to let her walk him during free period—bolted when he saw Skylar.

"Buster, NO!" Maya shouted, but the dog was already charging.

Skylar froze. Everyone expected her to be annoyed. Instead, she dropped to her knees. "Oh my GOD, is that a golden? I've wanted one since forever!"

As Buster enthusiastically licked Skylar's perfectly styled face, ruining her makeup entirely, something weird happened. Skylar laughed. Actually laughed. Not the curated Instagram-story giggle, but a real, snorting, absolutely unhinged laugh.

"Your dog just made me look like I went swimming in Sephora," Skylar said, wiping her face. "I'm Skylar. And you're the girl who walks a golden retriever like it's totally normal?"

"Maya. And Buster has no boundaries."

"Clearly." Skylar's phone buzzed with a notification. She groaned. "My mom wants me to pick up vitamins. Again. She thinks they'll fix my 'stress issues.'"

"No joke," Maya said. "I just had one that tasted like floor wax."

"THE cherry ones?"

Their eyes met. Lightning struck—not the romantic kind, but the friend kind. The recognition that everyone was faking it till they made it.

"Wanna walk Buster with me?" Maya asked. "He's surprisingly good at emotional support."

Skylar stood up, ruined eyeliner and all. "I would literally pay for that experience right now."

The sphinx had riddled herself. The answer wasn't being perfect—it was being real.
