Riddle of the Cafeteria Sphinx

Maya's morning started with her mom shoving a horse-pill **vitamin** at her.

"You're growing, Maya. You need nutrients."

"I'm fifteen, Mom. Not a plant."

She grabbed the vitamin and bolted, but the day was already doomed. At lunch, her crush Jake was holding court at his usual table, talking about how his summer trip to Thailand changed his life.

"You guys haven't lived till you've had fresh **papaya**," Jake said, sounding like a travel influencer. "The stuff here is basically water compared to the real deal."

Maya's stomach did that thing it did whenever Jake spoke—somersaults, but like, nervous ones. She'd been **friend**-zoned since sixth grade, when she'd accidentally laughed so hard at his joke that milk came out her nose. Some things define you forever.

"I love papaya," she said, because apparently she still hadn't learned.

Jake's eyes lit up. "No way. Most people think it tastes like feet."

"It's... complex?" Maya tried.

"You gotta try the special stuff they sell at that international market on 4th," Jake said. "My mom buys these huge ones. We should—"

"Jake!" came a voice from the entrance. Tyler, the varsity quarterback, strode in like he owned the place. "Coach wants to talk to you about the **bull** riding thing for homecoming."

"Bull riding?" someone asked. "At our school?"

"It's inflatable," Tyler said dismissively. "But Jake's gotta try out. Anyway—"

The table erupted. Jake was distracted. Maya's moment vanished like smoke.

She spent the rest of lunch poking at her tray, feeling like that weird **sphinx** statue in the library—the one with the human head and lion body, forever stuck between two worlds. Not popular enough to sit with Jake's crowd. Not weird enough to sit with the theater kids. Just... Maya, perpetually in between.

The next morning, her mom held out the vitamin again.

Maya took it without arguing.

"What changed?" her mom asked.

"Nothing," Maya said, swallowing the pill with a gulp of orange juice. "Just realized maybe some things take time to work."
