Riddle of the Bathroom Mirror

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers hovering over the straightener. Third pass through her thick, curly hair and it was still doing that weird frizz thing at the ends. Ugh. Why did homecoming week have to exist?

Her iPhone buzzed on the counter — fifth Snapchat notification in two minutes.

"u coming???" — Kai

"almost ready" — Maya lied. Classic.

She wasn't almost ready. She was having an existential crisis in a bathroom covered in steam and broken promises.

The door banged open. Chloe stumbled in, looking like a zombie who'd personally cancelled her own funeral plans. Dark circles, messy ponytail, the whole "I got four hours of sleep because life is pain" vibe.

"Chlo, you okay?"

"Fine," Chloe muttered, then caught Maya's eye in the mirror. "No. Jake's being a total bull in chem today. Made that comment about my project again. Loud. Everyone heard."

Maya's stomach dropped. Jake was that guy — rich, confident, convinced the world was his personal sitcom and everyone else was just supporting cast.

"That's actually trash," Maya said. "We should tell —"

"And get labeled 'snitches'? Hard pass." Chloe sighed. "Whatever. I'm over it. Mostly. Are you almost ready? Kai's lowkey freaking out about Tyler being there."

"Bull would sense weakness." Maya straightened her hair one more time.

They walked into the gym like they owned the place — or at least like they'd rented it for the evening. The music was already headache-loud, lights spinning, people scattered in groups. Maya spotted Kai immediately, standing near the punch bowl with that awkward "I don't know what to do with my hands" energy.

Then she saw it — the homecoming court display. A literal sphinx prop from the ancient Egypt theme, painted gold and ridiculous.

"What is that?" Maya pointed.

"Supposedly it's got riddles," Chloe said. "Student council thought it'd be 'interactive.'"

"Interactive." Like anything at school was actually interactive.

But then Jake sauntered over to the sphinx, surrounded by his squad. He read the riddle aloud, voice carrying.

"I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I?"

Silence. Then someone yelled, "An echo!"

Jake shrugged. "Too easy."

Maya felt it then — the thing she'd been feeling all week but couldn't name. The pressure to be perfect, to have perfect hair and perfect posts and perfect everything. The way everyone was performing, even the bullies.

She pulled out her iPhone, opened Snapchat, and posted a pic of the ridiculous sphinx with the caption: "this school is actually so unhinged no cap"

Eight notifications immediately.

Maya took a breath. "Hey Chloe?"

"Yeah?"

"Wanna go try the riddle thing?"

Chloe actually smiled. "Bet."

They walked through the crowd, heads high. Maya's hair wasn't perfect. Jake was still a bull. The music was terrible. But she had her people, her phone, and the confidence to walk into a room like she belonged there.

Sometimes that was enough.
