Riddle in the Storm
Maya's phone buzzed with the third text from Jaden: 'u coming??? everyone's asking bout u'
She groaned and flopped onto her bed, where Barnaby—their overweight orange tabby—blinked slowly at her. The neighborhood sphinx, that's what she called him. He knew everything and said nothing, just watched her spiral into another panic attack about Tyler's party.
'You don't understand,' she told the cat, who'd apparently decided her chest was an acceptable bed. 'It's not just a party. It's THE party. If I don't go, I'm literally dead socially. But if I DO go, I'll just stand there like a loser while everyone else is living their best lives.'
Barnaby yawned, showing teeth that looked suspiciously like he was judging her.
Thunder rattled the window. Great. A lightning storm. Because the universe hadn't already made tonight difficult enough.
Her phone lit up again. Not Jaden this time. Tyler. 'hey! hope u can make it. everyone wants u there ;)'
Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to organ. The interest was mutual? Tyler, the guy she'd been lowkey crushing on since freshman year, actually WANTED her there?
Another text came through: 'ps my cousin has this insane sphinx statue in his room. we're doing riddles and clues. it's gonna be sick'
Okay, that was unexpectedly specific. But also… kind of perfect? Maya loved puzzles. Riddles. She was good at them. Maybe tonight wasn't about being the coolest person in the room. Maybe it was about finding her lane—her way to shine.
'Barnaby, watch this,' she declared, scooping the cat off her chest. 'I'm gonna go to that party and I'm gonna CRUSH those riddles. Watch me.'
The cat blinked, unimpressed.
Outside, lightning flashed so bright it turned the room white. For a second, Maya could see her reflection in the window—hair a mess, eyes wide, heart pounding. But also… ready?
She grabbed her jacket. 'Fine. I'll go. But if I get there and it's awk, I'm calling you to rescue me.'
Barnaby flopped over and went back to sleep.
But Maya was already moving, checking her reflection one last time, thinking maybe—just maybe—tonight could be the start of something new. Even if it was just solving sphinx riddles while lightning cracked overhead and everyone else worried about being cool.
She could work with that.
