Riddle in the Rain
Maya's purple cable knit sweater was basically her personality—cozy, slightly stretched out, and covered in mysterious stains. Which is why I was freaking out when she suggested we crash Tyler's pool party.
"Bro, your hair looks fine," she said, flipping through her sphinx mythology book like it was Vogue. "It's giving I-don't-care-chic."
"It's giving I-haven't-slept-in-three-days," I muttered. "I can't face Tyler with this rat's nest on my head. He's gonna think I'm a mess."
That's when Maya hit me with her riddle voice: "What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grows?"
"A mountain?" I guessed. "Your ego?"
"Hair, Zara. It's just hair." She grabbed my hand. "Now come on. We're going to that party, and you're going to own this look."
The party was exactly what I expected—too loud, too many people trying too hard. Tyler was by the pool, being all cool and confident. I felt like I'd swallowed a stone.
Then Jason had to go full idiot mode and cannonball right next to me.
Cold water everywhere. My hair plastered to my face, makeup running, dignity evaporating. Everyone stared. I could feel my face burning hotter than the sun.
But then Maya started laughing. Not mean-girl laughing—like, genuinely cracking up. "You look like a drowned rat!" she wheezed. "It's perfect!"
Something in me snapped. I started laughing too. Hard. So hard I fell into the pool fully clothed.
Tyler jumped in after me. "Guess I'm joining the drowned rat club," he said, grinning.
We sat on the pool edge afterward, sopping wet, shivering, while Maya lectured us about how sphinxes were actually pretty chill if you didn't try to out-riddle them.
"You know," Tyler said, squeezing water from his shirt, "your hair looks better wet."
"Shut up," I said, but I was smiling.
Sometimes the worst moments become the best stories. And sometimes your best friend is right—hair is just hair. But friendships? Those are the cables that hold everything together, even when you're both dripping wet and feeling like total disasters.
