Riddle in the Dugout

Maya's stomach did backflips as she clutched her baseball glove. Varsity tryouts. Finally. The dugout smelled like stale sunflower seeds and teenage anxiety — a combo she'd never get used to.

"You got this, " Liam said, bumping her shoulder. His backward cap screamed confidence.

She wished she could borrow some. Maya wasn't even sure she deserved to be here.

Then she saw it. A cat — a mangy orange tabby — perched atop the backstop like it owned the place. It stared at her with ancient, knowing eyes. Something about that gaze felt weirdly profound.

Coach blew the whistle. Chaos erupted. Batting practice, grounders, coaches shouting stats she didn't understand. Maya faded to the edge, hyperventilating quietly. Why was she so scared?

CRACK.

Lightning forked across the sky. Raindrops the size of gumballs splatted the infield. Everyone scrambled for cover. Maya ended up squeezed beside Elena, the team's star shortstop, who was surprisingly tiny up close.

"Hey, " Elena said. "You're the freshman with the weird batting stance, right?"

Weird. Great. "Yeah. It's... a work in progress."

Elena grinned. "It's fire though. Keep it."

Fire? No one had ever called her anything fire before.

Thunder rattled the metal roof. The orange cat appeared again, now sitting on the dugout bench like it had VIP access. It looked at Maya, then at the scoreboard, then back.

"That cat's been stalking me all day, " Maya said.

Elena laughed. "That's Barnaby. He's basically the team mascot. Smart as hell, though. Once solved a riddle for my English SAT prep."

"Seriously?"

"Deadass. He's like a sphinx or something. Mysterious little genius."

Something clicked. Baseball wasn't about being perfect — it was about solving problems, adjusting, figuring out what worked. Maybe she didn't need to be anyone else.

"Hey Elena, " Maya said, her voice steadier. "Can you show me that drill you were doing earlier?"

Elena's eyes lit up. "Finally. I was hoping you'd ask."

Outside, the storm cleared. Barnaby the cat stretched, satisfied. The riddle had been solved, and Maya had finally found her place in the lineup.
