Riddle in Orange

Maya clutched her iPhone like a lifeline, thumb hovering over Leo's Instagram story for the thousandth time that night. The house party thumped around her - bass vibrating through the floor, red solo cups everywhere, seniors draped across the couch like they owned the place.

She was fifteen and invisible, and that was exactly how she liked it.

Until she saw him.

Leo Chen, leaning against the backyard porch railing in that ridiculous bright orange hoodie - the same one from his profile picture. He looked like a sphinx carved from moonlight and awkwardness, unreadable and magnetic all at once. People called him the Sphinx because he never spoke, just watched everything with those dark, knowing eyes.

Maya's heart did that embarrassing flutter thing. She'd been watching him from afar since September, analyzing his posts like they were ancient texts. What did his song choices mean? Why so many sunset photos?

"You staring at my story again?"

Maya nearly dropped her phone. Leo was standing right there, close enough that she could smell rain and something citrusy. Orange.

"I- what? No. I was just-"

"It's okay." A half-smile. "Your face pops up on my viewer list every time. It's actually kind of flattering."

Heat rushed to her cheeks. "You NOTICE who looks?"

"I notice everything. That's the curse." He gestured vaguely at the party. "Everyone thinks I'm quiet. I'm just... observant."

The orange fabric of his hoodie brushed her arm as he shifted. "So what's your story?"

"What?"

"Your story. On your Instagram. It's blank."

Maya felt naked. "I don't post. I just... watch."

"Me too. The Sphinx doesn't post. The Sphinx observes. But sometimes..." He pulled out his own phone, "the Sphinx wants to be seen."

He held out his iPhone. An unsent story draft: a photo of HER, from earlier tonight, laughing with her friends against the kitchen wall.

"You were going to post ME?"

"I was going to send it to you. But I didn't know how."

The bass from inside dropped. Someone laughed. Maya looked at Leo - really looked at him - and saw the same nervous energy she felt every day.

"Your phone," she said. "Unlock it."

He did. She opened Instagram, found the photo, hit send.

"There," she said. "Now you're not just watching anymore."

Leo's smile was bright as the orange fabric between them. "Wanna get out of here? I know a place with actual sphinxes."

"Sphinxes?"

"Greek restaurant downtown. Their statues are terrifying. And the baklava is undefeated."

Maya grabbed her phone, her heart pounding like it finally knew exactly what it was doing.

"Lead the way, Sphinx."
