Riddle by the Pool

Maya's stupid hat was already three sizes too big, sliding down over her eyes as she stood at the edge of Sarah's above-ground pool like a total loser. The neon green bucket hat had seemed like a good idea when she bought it online—a bold fashion statement, her best friend Chloe had called it. Now it just felt like a beacon announcing, "Hey everyone, look at this freshman trying way too hard."

Across the pool, Jordan—the senior who'd been giving Maya those looks that made her stomach do backflips all week—was gathering everyone for something called the Sphinx Game. Maya had no clue what that meant, but when Jordan caught her eye and gestured for her to join, her feet moved before her brain could process how badly this could go.

"Alright," Jordan said, all confident energy and perfect teeth, "the Sphinx is simple. Someone gives you a riddle, you solve it or you take the punishment. And trust me, the punishments are brutal."

Great. Just great.

The group formed a circle around the pool, leaving Maya conspicuously empty-handed. No towel, no phone, no nothing except that ridiculous green hat.

"New girl first," announced Taylor, whose beauty Insta had literally fifty thousand followers. "Riddle time, little Sphinx. What has to be broken before you can use it?"

Maya's brain went blank. The answer hovered at the tip of her tongue—something obvious, something everyone knew—but suddenly all eyes were on her, and the hat slipped lower, and the pool water reflected the party lights like tiny stars, and she just… froze.

Then Jordan caught her eye again, gave this tiny encouraging nod, and Maya's brain finally kicked in.

"An egg," she said, surprising herself with how steady her voice came out.

Taylor raised an impressed eyebrow. "Not bad, green hat. Not bad at all."

And just like that, Maya wasn't the awkward freshman anymore. She was the green-hat girl who'd survived the Sphinx. Jordan splashed her later—"accidentally," he claimed—and Maya laughed, actually laughed, and when Chloe asked if she wanted to leave early, Maya shook her head.

Some hats weren't just fashion statements. Some were armor. Some were proof that maybe, just maybe, you could survive this whole high school thing after all.
