Riddle by the Pool
The community pool glittered like someone had spilled diamonds across the surface, but Maya couldn't appreciate it. Not with Jordan's crew occupying the prime shaded loungers like they owned the place.
"You coming in or what?" Leo called from the water, splashing water in her direction. Her best friend since elementary, Leo had zero chill today.
"Maybe," Maya muttered, adjusting her bikini top for the fiftieth time. She felt like everyone was watching, judging, decoding her like she was some kind of sphinx with a riddle she couldn't even solve herself.
That's when she saw the dog. A scrawny, mutt-looking thing with one ear that flopped and one that stood at attention, padding along the pool fence like it was contemplating the meaning of life.
Maya found herself walking toward it before she could overthink it. The dog let out this soft whine, tail doing this tentative little wiggle.
"Hey, buddy," she whispered, crouching down. The dog flopped onto its back, belly exposed like, *please, I need this.*
"Oh my god, are you seriously befriending a stray right now?" Jordan's voice cut through the air. Maya's stomach did that thing where it tried to exit through her throat.
She stood up, dusting off her knees. "He's not a stray. He's obviously someone's pet."
"Whatever." Jordan flipped her hair. "We're about to play chicken. You in?"
The classic friend group test. Maya looked at the dog, who was now watching her with these impossibly hopeful eyes. Then at the pool, where Jordan and her minions were waiting to see if Maya would fold.
The dog nudged her hand with its wet nose.
"Nah," Maya heard herself say. "I'm good."
Jordan's expression shifted, processing this breach in the social order. But then Leo swam over, grinning. "Chicken's overrated anyway. I found the coolest beetle by the filter earlier."
Maya sat by the fence, the dog curled up beside her like they'd been friends forever. For the first time all summer, she could actually breathe.
Sometimes the riddle isn't about solving it. It's about realizing you don't have to play by anyone's rules but your own.
