Riddle at the Deep End
Marcus's bucket hat was basically his emotional support animal. Sixth consecutive day wearing it, and his hair was starting to develop weird ridges, but whatever. It was armor against the universe's constant judgment.
The cable tangled around his ankles like a hostile octopus. "Dude," Jesse groaned, wrestling the speaker wire across the pool deck, "if this Bluetooth doesn't connect, I'm actually gonna lose it."
"Just get closer to the router," Maya said, already ankle-deep in the water, her floaty unicorn glowing iridescent. "You're overthinking everything. Again."
Everything was fine until The Sphinx showed up.
Okay, not an actual mythological creature. That would've been easier. Instead, it was Chloe—the senior who moved like gravity itself, pulling everyone into her orbit without trying. She perched on the diving board like it was a throne, watching Jesse's failed DJ attempts with amused eyes.
"Who's the hat guy?" she asked, and Marcus felt his entire existence glitch.
"I'm Marcus." His voice cracked. Smooth. Totally smooth.
Chloe slid into the water, surfacing near him like she'd calculated the trajectory. "Cool hat. But I'm curious—what's under there?"
A sphinx riddle. No joke.
Marcus's brain short-circuited. This was it—the moment he either revealed the disastrous haircut his mom gave him yesterday, or maintained the mystery and somehow became intriguing.
"Trade secrets," he managed, and Jesse snorted so hard he dropped the cable into the pool.
"Bold," Chloe said, tilting her head. "I like it. Keep the mystery. It's working."
She splashed water at him, and for once, Marcus didn't duck. His hat soaked through, heavy and uncomfortable, but he just grinned.
Maybe confidence wasn't about what you covered up. Maybe it was about what you were willing to let people see—even if it started with getting absolutely splashed by the prettiest senior in school.
"Your turn," Chloe called. "Truth or dare, mystery guy?"
Marcus took off his hat.
