Riddle at the Deep End

cablepoolcatdogsphinx

Maya's earbud cable dangled like a lifeline as she hovered at the edge of the pool party, clutching her phone like a shield. The Barker twins' annual backyard bash was basically a social minefield, and she was fourteen and armed with nothing but a playlist and existential dread.

"Yo, Maya! You gonna stand there all day or actually get in?" Jordan called from the pool, grinning that stupid confident grin that made everyone love him.

Before she could deploy her usual I'm-good-just-chilling defense mechanism, something brushed against her ankle. She jumped, nearly dropping her phone into the deep end.

A massive dog—like, actual bear-sized—bounded past, chasing a squirrel up the fence. Chaos erupted. Drinks spilled. Someone screamed. And in that perfect moment of distraction, SHE emerged.

The Barker's sphinx cat, Artemis, slinked from beneath the patio table like a hairless, wrinkly alien queen. The creature locked its enormous eyes on Maya and let out this sound—part yowl, part question, like it knew something about her that she didn't even know about herself.

"She only does that to people who're hiding something," Jordan's little sister said, appearing beside Maya like a tiny, terrifying oracle. "It's, like, her thing."

Suddenly Maya was the center of attention. Everyone watching. Waiting. And Artemis still staring like sphinx-cat judge, jury, and executioner.

What was she hiding? The fact that she felt like a fraud half the time? That she still slept with a nightlight? That she had no clue who she was supposed to be?

Her cable connection to safety felt suddenly stupid. So she did something completely un-Maya.

"I'm terrified I'll never figure out who I'm supposed to be," she blurted. Dead silence. Then: "Also, your cat is judging me and it's weirdly personal."

Jordan laughed. "Bro, we're ALL clueless. Did you see me try to do a kickflip earlier? Faceplant central."

Someone tossed her a pool noodle. Artemis deigned to nod approval. And just like that, Maya wasn't hiding anymore.

The dog came back. The cat vanished. The party continued. But something had shifted—like riddle solved, except the answer had been inside her all along. (Okay, yeah, she'd watched too much anime. But still.)
