Reflections in Deep Water

The corporate retreat had been Elena's idea—team building by the resort pool, mai tais at noon, and the aggressive sort of bonding that only happens when everyone's slightly drunk and wearing too little clothing. But it wasn't the colleagues in their swimsuits that made her skin prickle. It was the way Jonathan watched her from the lounge chair, his phone angled just so, capturing something.

She'd suspected for months. The deleted emails, the strange receipts, the way he knew things he shouldn't. Her husband claimed his frequent business trips were necessary, that the consulting firm kept him away more than either of them liked. But a corporate spy doesn't leave fingerprints, and Elena had learned to read between the lines of omission.

The pool's surface rippled as someone dove in, distorting the underwater lights into shimmering ghosts. Elena watched her own reflection fragment—a woman who'd built an career on noticing what others missed, now missing everything that mattered in her own life. The water beckoned, cool and forgiving, offering the temporary oblivion of suspended animation.

"You're overthinking again," Jonathan said, sliding into the chair beside her. His hand found her knee, familiar and warm, and she wanted to believe it was enough.

"I'm thinking," she said, watching the water settle back into glass-smooth stillness, "about how things look different from below. How you can never quite tell what's real and what's just the light playing tricks on you."

He laughed, but his eyes darted toward his phone on the table between them. Not a spy, she told herself. Not yet. But something. Someone who'd already decided she couldn't be trusted with whatever truth he carried.

Elena stood and walked to the pool's edge. The water waited, dark and unknowable, like the future she'd built on foundations she'd never truly examined. Sometimes the only way forward was down.

She stepped in and let the water close over her head, holding her breath in the silence, knowing some truths can only be spoken in the places where words cannot follow.
