Recipe for Resurrection

Maya stood in her kitchen at 2 AM, staring at the wilted spinach in her crisper drawer. Three days since Marcus left, and she'd been eating nothing but green smoothies and takeout. The spinach represented everything she was supposed to be doing—taking care of herself, eating her greens, being the kind of woman who had her shit together. Instead, she felt like a zombie moving through the days, showing up to meetings, nodding at the right times, her body present but her soul still stuck in that moment when Marcus said "I think we need different things."

She grabbed the vitamin supplements from the counter—Vitamin D for the seasonal depression she definitely had now, B-complex for energy, magnesium for sleep. She dry-swallowed them all without water, a punishment masquerading as self-care. At 42, she was supposed to be thriving, not swallowing handfuls of pills in the middle of the night while her ex-husband was probably somewhere actually living his best life.

Outside, lightning fractured the sky, a sudden violent crack that made her flinch. The power flickered and died, leaving her in darkness. And in that darkness, something cracked open inside her too. She'd been so busy trying to optimize herself, to supplement and smoothie her way through grief, that she hadn't let herself feel any of it. She'd been performing wellness instead of being human.

Maya slid down to the kitchen floor and finally let herself cry—not the neat, composed tears of therapy, but the ugly, snorting sobs of someone whose heart had broken. The spinach could wait. The vitamins could wait. For tonight, she would just be this: a woman in the dark, feeling everything at once, alive in her pain instead of dead inside.
