Pyramids of Glass
Maya's pyramid was going to be epic. A three-foot-tall ancient Egyptian masterpiece made of sugar cubes and gold spray paint, due Monday for history class. But right now, she was sprawled on her bedroom floor, surrounded by glue sticks and panic.
"You good, Maya?" Her golden retriever, Buster, nosed her face, leaving a wet stripe on her cheek. Typical. Her dog had better social skills than she did.
"No," she groaned into the carpet. "I have to present this in front of literally everyone. Jordan's gonna roast me."
Social hierarchy at Northwood High was like a pyramid of glass—fragile, transparent, and if you slipped up, everyone watched you shatter. Jordan sat at the top. Maya? She was somewhere in the gravel.
Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up about Emma's party Friday. The same FOMO that hit her every weekend. She stared at her stuffed bear from childhood, Mr. Cuddles, sitting on her shelf like a judgmental fuzzy critic. Why did she still have that thing? What was she, seven?
"Whatever." Maya grabbed her phone and started typing. *Sorry, can't make it. Busy with stuff.*
Lame. Everything felt lame lately.
Something shifted in her reflection in the mirror—dark circles, messy bun, sweatpants she'd been wearing for 48 hours. When did being a teenager become this exhausting performance?
Buster whined, resting his chin on her knee. Those soulful eyes, like he knew something she didn't.
"You're right, boy."
She deleted the text. Typed: *Actually, yeah! I'll be there.*
Her hands shook. So what if Jordan made a comment? So what if her pyramid collapsed during the presentation? At least she'd show up.
"Bear it, Maya," she whispered, laughing at her own joke. "No, seriously—bear it."
She grabbed Mr. Cuddles off the shelf, gave him a fist bump, and placed him by her half-finished pyramid. A weird little shrine to growing up—comfort objects and ancient monuments and the courage to just show up.
Sometimes the bravest thing wasn't climbing to the top. It was standing in the middle of the mess, glue on your fingers, dog hair on your sweatpants, and being okay with it.
