Pyramids in the Break Room

The corporate pyramid chart on Marcus's whiteboard had seven layers. Elena had stopped counting after being stuck on layer four for three years.

Tuesday evenings were for padel — that trendy racquet sport Marcus insisted would help them network with the firm's partners. Elena stood at the baseline, sweat stinging her eyes, watching her husband laugh at something the senior partner said. The glass walls of the court enclosed them like a terrarium, trapping all the professional bravado and marital disappointment in humid recirculation.

"You're too tense," Marcus told her in the car afterward. "You need to loosen up if you want to make partner."

She'd started running at dawn, something she could do alone. The pavement unfurled beneath her sneakers like an escape route, each footfall a tiny rebellion against the spinach smoothies Marcus now insisted they drink every morning. The green sludge tasted like obligation, like everything else in their life together.

The email arrived Friday afternoon: Marcus was moving to the Dubai office. He'd mentioned the opportunity once, months ago, between sips of that damned spinach drink. She'd thought he was musing aloud, not announcing a trajectory.

That evening, as she packed her studio apartment — the one she'd secretly leased last week — the sunset through her window turned everything the color of a bruised orange. She'd always hated orange, the way Marcus's face flushed when he drank, the safety cones that marked off construction in her life.

Her phone buzzed. Marcus, asking if she'd picked up his dry cleaning. She watched the orange light bleed across the cardboard boxes, thinking about pyramids, how they were built to honor the dead but required living people to carry the stones.

She left the phone on the floor.

Outside, someone ran past her window, their shadow stretching long and thin against the dying light. Elena laced up her running shoes and followed them into the twilight, leaving the pyramid, the padel racket, the spinach, and Marcus behind, one step at a time.
