Pyramids at the Pool

Kai stood at the edge of Jake's legendary pool party, clutching a red solo cup like it was a lifeline. He'd been **bearing** a secret all semester - he was the anonymous artist painting bear murals across town. Each piece appeared overnight: a bear swimming through stars, a bear made of city lights, a bear reading on a park bench. The Instagram account had blown up. Everyone at school talked about it. No one knew it was him, the quiet sophomore who spent too much time watching street art tutorials.

He'd been **running** from credit since day one. What if they hated it? What if they laughed? What if it was weird that a 16-year-old obsessed over bears when he'd never even seen one in real life?

"You're Kai, right?" Jake's sister Maya appeared beside him, dropping onto the pool chair. "You do that bear art, don't you?"

Kai nearly choked on his punch. "What?"

"The murals. I figured it out." She flipped her phone toward him - a screenshot of his DMs to the art account, asking about technique. He'd been careless. Too careless. "Don't worry, I haven't told anyone. But there's like, this whole **pyramid** of people trying to find you. Jake thinks it's some college kid. The art club president thinks it's a conspiracy."

"Why didn't you expose me?" Kai asked, genuinely confused.

Maya shrugged. "Because last month, when I was having that terrible week, I found the bear reading on the bench outside the library. It made me feel less alone. Isn't that the point?" She stood up. "Also, your technique needs work on the shadows. But the emotion? It's there."

She walked away toward the **pool**, diving in perfectly. Kai watched her surface, shake wet hair from her face, and wave at him like she'd known him forever.

His secret was out - but only to one person. And somehow, that was exactly enough. The bear murals weren't about credit anymore. They were about connection. And maybe that was the whole point.

Kai set down his cup and picked up his phone. Time to paint something new.
