Pyramids and Padel Courts

The corporate retreat had been Marcus's idea—team building, he'd called it. Now Elena stood by the infinity pool, the **water** cascading over its edge like her own dwindling patience, watching the senior partners play **padel** on the pristine court below. Their laughter echoed across the resort, privileged and unselfconscious.

"You're not playing?" said a voice behind her.

She turned to find David, the new VP of Operations, holding two drinks. One was bright **orange**, sunset-colored in a way that matched the sky.

"I'm good," she said. "Just watching."

He joined her at the railing. "The corporate **pyramid**," he mused, following her gaze to the court. "Always entertaining to watch from the sidelines."

Elena hesitated, then surprised herself. "I turned down the promotion yesterday."

David's eyebrows rose. "The Regional Director spot?"

"The one everyone's supposed to want. The one that puts you on track for the C-suite." She took the orange drink he offered. "I don't want to climb anymore."

They watched in silence as the match below intensified—raquets swinging, competitive grunts, the tennis ball popping back and forth like ammunition.

"My ex-wife played padel," David said suddenly. "Competitive weekends, expensive clubs. We climbed the pyramid together. She left when I realized I'd rather be happy than impressive."

The orange sunset deepened to coral as the first stars appeared. Below, the partners finished their game, high-fiving and plotting their next conquest.

"What now?" David asked.

Elena finished her drink. "I start my own consultancy next month. Smaller. Different."

He smiled. "I might know some clients."

They stood as the resort lights flickered on, two people at the edge of the pool, watching others play games they'd finally stopped wanting to win.
