Pyramid Schemes & Pool Parties

Maya stared at the invitation like it was a bomb.pool party at Jake's house. Saturday. 3-6 PM. The social pyramid of sophomore year had officially crowned Jake its king, and Maya was somewhere near the bottom, hanging out with the earthworms.

"You going?" Liam asked, flopping onto her bed. Her cat, Mochi, scattered as Liam's backpack hit the floor.

"Can't. Mom's working the double shift, and someone's gotta stay here with Mochi. He's been acting weird since Tuesday." Maya gestured at the cat, who was currently batting at the coaxial cable hanging loose from the wall.

"Bro, that cat's fine. He's just vibing." Liam sat up. "Just come for an hour. Jake's got that above-ground pool, his parents bought, like, fifty dollars worth of snacks, and everyone's gonna be there."

"Everyone. Including Sarah." Maya's voice dropped.

"Including Sarah, who's been asking about you since you two stopped talking in April." Liam raised an eyebrow. "The social pyramid's not real, Maya. We built it in our heads."

Maya looked at Mochi, who'd somehow tangled himself in the cable. "What if I can't fix it? What if it's awkward?"

"What if it's not?" Liam countered. "What if you show up, Sarah meets you by the pool like she used to, and you realize the pyramid was just some weird mental geometry we made up to feel bad about ourselves?"

Maya thought about it. About Mochi finding trouble but always landing on his feet. About how sometimes you had to pull the cable to see what was on the other end.

"Fine," she said, already reaching for her phone. "But if this is a trap—"

"Then I'll personally dismantle the pyramid myself," Liam promised. "Now, can you help me with this history homework before I lose my mind?"

Maya laughed, and Mochi finally freed himself from the cable, looking offended. Some things, she decided, were worth the risk. Even if they involved pools, pyramids, and confronting your best friend at what felt like the top of the world.
