Pyramid Schemes and Salt Water

The corporate pyramid scheme had finally collapsed, taking Elena's savings and her faith in human nature with it. She sat at the edge of the resort infinity pool, feet submerged in the tepid water, watching her iPhone screen light up with another collection notice. The tropical sunset painted the sky in bruised purples and oranges, mocking the devastation of her bank account.

'You look like someone who's seen a ghost,' a voice said beside her.

Elena turned to find a woman in her sixties with silver-streaked hair and eyes that had seen too much. 'Worse,' Elena said. 'I've seen myself.' She gestured at the phone. 'Three years of building someone else's dream. I was halfway up the pyramid when it crumbled.'

The woman sat beside her, dipping her own feet into the water. 'I'm Joan. I was third from the top of a different kind of pyramid—investment banking, 2008. Lost everything except this.' She held out her palm, revealing a faded tattoo of an Egyptian eye.

Elena stared at the weathered skin, the lines mapping decades of choices. 'Does it get easier?'

'No,' Joan said, 'but you learn to swim.' She nodded toward the darkening ocean beyond the pool. 'Water doesn't care about your spreadsheets. Your résumé. Your five-year plan. It just is.' She reached over, gently pressing Elena's palm between her own hands. 'You're still here. That's the only metric that matters.'

Elena's phone vibrated with another notification. She picked it up and dropped it into the pool.

Joan raised an eyebrow.

'Insurance deductible,' Elena said. 'And the most expensive therapy session I've ever paid for.'

They sat together as the last light vanished, listening to the water move against the pool's edge, neither speaking, both beginning again.
