Pyramid Schemes

Mark stared at his reflection in the office restroom mirror, pulling at the stubborn gray hair above his temple. Forty-two years old and still obsessed with signs of aging while the company crumbled around him.

The corporate restructure meeting had been going on for three hours. His boss, a man whose personality could best be described as a charging bull with no brakes, had spent ninety minutes explaining why the new organizational chart wasn't a pyramid scheme—though it looked suspiciously like one.

"You're not seeing the big picture," Reynolds had bellowed, his face flushing that particular shade of crimson that meant someone was about to get scapegoated. "This is about streamlining efficiency. Creating a leaner, more agile—"

"More like creating a pyramid where everyone below pays for the people at the top," Mark had muttered to Sarah, the only other person in the room who seemed to recognize bullshit when it was being shoveled at them.

Now, standing alone in his office with the sad container of spinach he'd brought for lunch—because at some point he'd decided health mattered more than enjoyment—Mark found himself wondering why he stayed. The spinach was cold, the company was sinking, and his hair kept betraying him.

His phone buzzed. A text from Elena: "Dinner? My place? 7?"

They'd been dancing around each other for months, both trapped in marriages that had stopped being anything other than habit years ago. He should say no. Should go home and pretend that the woman waiting there still cared whether he came home or not.

Instead, he typed: "Yes."

The spinach went into the trash. The corporate pyramid could collapse without him. Tonight, he'd choose something real over something convenient. Even if it was just dinner.
