Pyramid Scheme in the Cafeteria
Maya's lunch tray hit the table with a hollow thud. Another day of sitting alone, watching the popular crowd's social pyramid from the bottom tier. She'd positioned herself near the salad bar, hoping for invisibility.
"Hey, you gonna eat that papaya?"
Maya jumped. Chris, the soccer captain, stood beside her table. Actual Chris. Who definitely didn't know she existed before today.
"Uh, yeah?" Maya managed, then immediately questioned why she'd said it like a question.
"Weird choice." He sat down anyway. "My mom's all into that exotic fruit stuff now. Says it's basically nature's vitamin."
The entire cafeteria seemed to hold its breath. The pyramid's top tier was staring.
"What?"
"The papaya. She's obsessed with this new wellness company?" Chris leaned in, lowering his voice. "Total pyramid scheme, but don't tell her I said that. She's making me take these weird supplements."
Something about the way he said it – the eye roll, the secret confidence – made Maya brave.
"My parents tried to recruit me into one of those last month," she said, slicing her papaya with deliberate slowness. "Apparently I have 'influencer potential.'"
Chris laughed. An actual laugh. "No way."
"Way."
"That's hilarious." He looked at her differently. Not like a pyramid surveying its base, but like someone actually seeing her.
"You're cool, Maya."
She paused, papaya halfway to her mouth. The social pyramid felt suddenly smaller, more climbable. Or maybe she just stopped looking up.
"So's the papaya," she said, finally taking a bite. "Wanna try?"
