Pyramid Scheme at the Lunch Table

The cafeteria buzzed with that nervous energy only Mondays could manufacture. Lucas, age 15 and socially invisible, sat hunched over his tray, watching the social pyramid rise before him. At the apex: Madison and her minions, radiating that effortless cool he'd spent three years trying to decode.

"Dude, you're staring again," whispered Tyra, his friend since kindergarten and the only person who'd witnessed his devastating braces phase firsthand. "That's not creepy at all."

"I'm not staring," Lucas lied. "I'm conducting research. For science."

"Total bull," Tyra said, stabbing at her mystery meat casserole. "You've been crushing on Madison since seventh grade. Just admit it."

Before Lucas could defend his honor—badly—Austin, Madison's lacrosse-playing boyfriend, materialized like some jock-shaped demon. "Hey, Lucas. My dog needs walking this weekend. You're still good for it, right?"

The whole table went silent. Everyone knew Austin's "dog walking" meant Lucas was basically his unpaid servant while Austin partied. But Lucas needed the money for concert tickets.

"Yeah," Lucas mumbled. "Sure."

"Cool." Austin fist-bumped the air and drifted away.

"You're such a pushover," Tyra sighed, but without real heat. She knew about the tickets.

That night, Lucas sat at his desk, staring at his goldfish, Captain Fin. The fish swam in endless circles, trapped in a glass box Lucas had cleaned faithfully every week for two years.

"We're both living our best lives, huh buddy?" Lucas tapped the glass. Captain Fin ignored him, as usual.

His phone buzzed. A group chat notification from—wait, Madison?

hey everyone! want to come over friday? my parents are gone lol

Lucas stared. Was this real? A pyramid scheme joke? Had Austin put her up to it? His heart did something stupid and fluttery.

Then: except lucas sry he's weird

His finger hovered over the screen. Every instinct screamed: delete it, pretend he never saw, maintain his comfortable invisibility.

Instead he typed: lame

Then, before courage could fail him: whatever i'm busy anyway walking austin's dog again lol maybe next time

He hit send, threw his phone across his bed like it was radioactive.

Captain Fin swam past, indifferent to human drama.

Two minutes later: that's actually messed up austin

Then from Madison: yeah you can come lol i was joking

Then from Austin: my bad bro see u friday

Lucas stared at his screen, grinning like an idiot. Social pyramids weren't built in a day, but sometimes—just sometimes—you could climb one step higher.

Captain Fin did a little flip. Lucas took it as a sign.
