Pyramid Scheme

bullfoxzombiepyramid

Maya dragged her feet through the cafeteria, feeling like a literal zombie after pulling an all-nighter for Mr. Henderson's chem final. The social hierarchy at Northwood High worked like a pyramid, and unfortunately, she was currently stuck somewhere near the bottom—sandwiched between the band kids and the AV club.

"Did you hear?" whispered her best friend Chloe, leaning in with those fox-like eyes that always seemed three steps ahead of everyone else's drama. "Jordan's spreading rumors that you failed Spanish."

Maya's stomach did a backflip. That was absolute bull, and Jordan knew it. She'd passed with a solid B-minus, thank you very much. But Jordan—perfect, popular Jordan whose Instagram stories were basically a highlight reel of their allegedly perfect life—had made it their mission to make Maya's existence miserable since seventh grade.

"Why though?" Maya groaned, resting her forehead on the cafeteria table. "I literally did nothing."

"Because you're becoming friends with Lexi," Chloe said, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "And Jordan's been trying to get into Lexi's squad since forever. You're basically competition."

Maya lifted her head, suddenly wide awake. "That's the most unhinged thing I've ever heard. Lexi's squad isn't even that—"

"Maya!" Lexi appeared at their table, sliding into the seat across from them. "Party at my place Friday. Parents are out of town. You should come."

The invitation hung in the air, weightier than Lexi probably realized. This was it—the chance to climb the social pyramid or finally crash and burn. Because here's the thing about high school: you can be the smartest person in the room, the funniest, the most talented—but if you don't crack the social code, you're invisible. And Maya was tired of being invisible. Even if it meant turning into a sleep-deprived, anxiety-ridden zombie to get there.

"I'll be there," Maya said, and something in her voice surprised even her. Confidence? Maybe. Or just desperation disguised as bravery.

Chloe shot her a warning look, but Maya just shrugged. Sometimes you have to play the game to change it. And if Jordan thought they could gatekeep friendships like they owned the social pyramid, they had another thing coming.

Fox mode: activated. Let the games begin.
