Pyramid of Silent Regrets

The corporate pyramid loomed outside her window, its glass facade catching the last light of Friday evening. Sarah pressed her forehead against the cold pane, thirty-seven years old and feeling ancient. The running shoes in her bag mocked her — she'd promised to start jogging again, but three months later, they'd never left the leather.

"You're still here?" Marcus's voice behind her, soft as always. The fox-faced junior partner who'd been slowly dismantling her department, one strategic meeting at a time. His charm was a weapon she'd underestimated.

"Just leaving." She grabbed her bag, but he stepped closer, his expensive cologne mixing with her own fading perfume. "Sarah, wait."

She turned. The office was empty now, just the hum of servers and distant traffic. What happened next felt inevitable — months of tension, late-night emails that drifted into personal territory, the way his eyes lingered on her across boardroom tables.

His kiss tasted like whiskey and desperation. She didn't pull away. For three minutes, she let herself drown in it, swimming in the dangerous warmth of a man who could ruin her career with one leaked email.

Then reality crashed back. The elevator dinged down the hall. She pushed him away, breathless. "This can't happen."

"Tomorrow night then?" Marcus straightened his tie, that fox-like grin returning. "My place. We can talk about the merger. Or not talk."

Sarah walked away without answering. But in the lobby mirror, she caught her own reflection — wild-eyed, alive in a way she hadn't been in years. The running shoes stayed in her bag. The pyramid waited. But something had shifted beneath the surface, and she wasn't sure whether she was running toward something or just running, finally running.
