The office betting pool tracked Elena's meltdown like a deathwatch. Everyone knew by Wednesday that she'd uncovered the pyramid scheme hollowing out the company's foundation—her mentor's masterpiece of fraud. Twenty years of friendship evaporated the moment she found the spreadsheets.

Now she sat by her apartment complex pool at midnight, chlorine and uncertainty stinging her eyes, considering the whistleblower call that would destroy careers including her own. A stray cat—scrawny, battle-scarred, missing half an ear—jumped onto the adjacent lounge chair and regarded her with ancient judgment.

"You understand betrayal," Elena whispered. "Every meal's a negotiation."

The cat's response was a slow blink, deceptively affectionate. Earlier that day, David had asked for coffee, his usual warmth replaced by something sharp and predatory. He knew she'd found the pyramid's buried chambers. He was offering her a choice: complicity or exile.

"The corporate ladder," he'd said, "is just a pyramid scheme we all agree to pretend isn't one. This one's just more honest about its mechanics."

Her phone buzzed—David again. Tomorrow's deadline for her decision loomed like a guillotine. The cat abandoned its judgment and began cleaning its paws with deliberate indifference, as if ethical dilemmas were merely inconveniences to be groomed away.
