Pyramid of Empty Lockers
The orange fluorescent buzz of hallway lights reflected off Maya's locker door as she stared at the photos taped inside. Her old self—middle school Maya with braces and zero fashion sense—grinned back beside current-day Maya, who'd just dyed her hair copper and felt like a fraud.
"You coming?" JJ called from down the hall, already surrounded by his crew. The pyramid of social hierarchy at Northwood High had JJ near the top, Maya somewhere in the middle-ish, and she was content with that. Mostly.
"Yeah," Maya lied, adjusting her new thrifted jacket. "Just grabbing my chem notebook."
Her stomach did that thing where it felt like a bear was hibernating inside it, all heavy and anxious. Tonight was JJ's house party—first big one of sophomore year—and everyone was going. Including Marcus, who'd started sitting at her lunch table this week and made her brain feel like static.
The party was exactly what Maya expected: red cups, too-loud music, people trying way too hard. She camped by the snack table, nursing an orange soda, watching JJ hold court like he invented fun.
"This party's mid, right?" Marcus appeared beside her, and the bear in her stomach woke up and started doing cartwheels. "I only came because I heard you'd be here."
Maya nearly spilled her soda. "Oh?"
"Yeah." Marcus's dimples showed. "Hey, wanna bail? There's this pyramid of empty lockers by the gym—I bet we could build something cool out of them."
She laughed. "You want to build architectural structures out of school property at ten PM?"
"I want to get out of here with someone who actually gets it." He grinned. "Also, yes."
They slipped out JJ's back door into the October chill. Marcus kept making jokes that were actually funny, and Maya found herself grinning so hard her face hurt. Behind them, the house thumped with music Maya didn't care about.
"So," Marcus said as they walked toward the school. "That copper hair? It's working."
The bear settled. For the first time, Maya felt exactly like herself—not middle school Maya, not the girl trying to fit into JJ's world, not anyone except her. And it turned out that was enough.
