Pyramid of Empty Hands
Elena hadn't stopped running since the third margarita. Her designer heels clicked against the pavement in a frantic rhythm that matched her heart. The corporate gala behind her was already becoming a blur of champagne toasts and fake smiles, but what she'd seen in that private office—that moment when Marcus, the CEO she'd worshipped for seven years, revealed his true nature—still burned behind her eyes.
She ducked into an alley behind a neon-lit palm reading shop, its fluorescent sign flickering like a warning. The old woman inside beckoned with wrinkled fingers. Elena usually dismissed this stuff as nonsense, but something made her sink into the velvet chair.
"You're running from something," the woman said, not asking. She took Elena's hand, tracing the lines on her palm with surprising gentleness. "Your lifeline's strong, but your heart line... it's been crossed recently. Betrayal."
Elena jerked her hand back. Marcus had built his empire on what he called a "pyramid of innovation"—each level of the organizational chart supporting those above it. But Elena had discovered the truth: it was a pyramid scheme of human lives. He'd been playing employees against each other, pitting divisions in competition, then firing the "losers" to boost stock prices. She'd been his most loyal soldier, executing his strategies with military precision.
"You see the structure," the palm reader continued, her eyes knowing. "But do you see your place in it?"
Elena thought of the pyramid award on her desk, of how she'd built her career on the same principles Marcus had taught her. How many lives had she damaged climbing to VP? How many times had she looked away?
"I can fix it," she whispered, more to herself than the old woman. "I have evidence. Board meeting tomorrow."
"And then what?" The palm reader's voice softened. "Another pyramid rises in its place. The structure never changes, only the architects."
Elena walked out into the cool night air, her phone already in hand. She wasn't running anymore. She was going to dismantle the pyramid, brick by brick, starting with the foundation she'd helped build herself.
