Pyramid of Empty Dreams

Marcus stood on his balcony at 3 AM, staring at the bottle of **water** on the railing—condensation weeping down its sides like the tears he couldn't shed anymore. The corporate pyramid scheme he'd engineered had finally collapsed, taking with it forty years of carefully constructed lies about success and stability.

He'd spent decades climbing this pyramid, stepping on colleagues and friends alike, always reaching for that next tier where he imagined happiness waited. Instead, he'd found only insomnia and the crushing weight of maintaining an illusion of prosperity for investors who'd trusted him with their life savings.

A bark from below broke his reverie. The neighbor's golden **dog**, Luna, trotted along the sidewalk with her usual joyous abandon. Marcus watched her chase shadows, stopping to investigate every scent with the kind of genuine curiosity he'd lost somewhere in his twenties. He remembered the **dog** he'd wanted as a child—the one his parents refused because it was too much responsibility.

"Too much responsibility," he muttered into the darkness. The irony tasted bitter.

His phone buzzed—another investor demanding answers. Marcus considered the **water** bottle again. How easy it would be to just fall, to let gravity solve everything. But Luna's bark came again, followed by her human's voice calling her name with such tenderness that Marcus's chest ached.

In that moment, he understood what he'd truly traded away while building his pyramid of deceit. The simple things—companionship, trust, the ability to sleep without pills—had been the real treasures all along. And they were gone, scattered like dust in the wind.

Marcus stepped back from the railing and diaoled his lawyer's number. It was time to start paying his debts—all of them. Even if it took the rest of his life, he would somehow find a way to make this right. Luna barked one more time, as if in encouragement, before disappearing around the corner toward home.
