Pyramid of Bravery

The social hierarchy at Lincoln High operated like a pyramid, and Maya had spent three years stuck at the base. That changed the summer before junior year, when a viral TikTok convinced her mom to join some sketchy wellness pyramid scheme, leaving Maya surrounded by essential oils and guilt.

"You need to get out there," her mom insisted, shoving a twenty-dollar bill into her hand. "Have fun. Be normal."

Easier said than done. When Maya showed up at Jake's pool party, her anxiety was doing full laps around her self-esteem. She clutched her dad's old fishing hat like a security blanket, brim pulled low.

"Nice hat," called Skylar — a junior, gorgeous, and operating at the pyramid's apex. Her tone was impossible to read.

"Thanks," Maya managed, before making a beeline for the snacks table.

The real trouble started when Jake's golden retriever, Bear, decided the floating hat in the pool was a personal challenge. Bear launched himself off the diving board with zero regard for physics, landing directly beside Maya with a splash that flooded half the party.

Everything went sideways — literally. Maya tumbled backward into the water, fully dressed, while Bear shook himself off like a wet dog apocalypse. Her hat sailed three feet away.

She surfaced gasping, expecting laughter. Instead, Skylar was knee-deep in the water, grabbing Maya's hat.

"Bear does this every party," Skylar said, extending a hand. "You okay?"

Maya nodded, water dripping from her hair. "This is officially the most embarrassing moment of my life."

"Challenge accepted," Skylar grinned. "Wait till you hear about the time I faceplanted in the cafeteria while holding a full tray."

By sunset, Maya was sitting on the pool edge with Skylar and Jake, sharing Takis and laughing about pyramid schemes, golden retrievers, and the beautiful disaster of being sixteen. Her hat dried on the chair beside them, crown slightly misshapen but perfectly hers.

Some pyramids were meant to be climbed. Others were meant to be rebuilt from the ground up, with better snacks and significantly less worrying about being cool.
