Pyramid in the Palm
The glass of whiskey sat on the mahogany desk, amber light catching the pyramid of ice slowly melting inside. Sarah's palm traced the cold condensation, her thumb pressing into the droplets like she was trying to erase something.
'You can't bear the weight of this forever, Marcus. Sooner or later, something's going to break.'
Marcus didn't look up from his iPhone, the blue light washing over his tired face. 'The merger goes through tomorrow. Three years of work, Sarah. You don't just walk away because it got harder than we expected.'
'Three people are in the hospital. The investigation is already starting.' Her voice dropped, intimate and devastating. 'Remember what you said in Cabo? That some pyramids are built on bones?' She pressed her palm flat against the desk now. 'I can't do this anymore. The lying, the covering up. I'm done.'
Marcus set down the phone, finally meeting her eyes. 'You think I wanted this? That I chose any of it?' His laugh was dark and hollow. 'The board doesn't care about ethics. They care about the quarterly report. About shareholders. About the fucking pyramid scheme we're all pretending is legitimate business.' He ran a hand through his graying hair. 'I'm trapped, Sarah. You leave, you take down everything. Us. The life we built.'
'What life?' Her voice broke. 'The dinners where we can't talk about work? The nights you stare at the ceiling? Marcus, I love you, but I'm watching you disappear.' She set her keycard on the desk, the plastic clicking softly against the wood. 'The bear got us both, honey. The difference is, I'm willing to admit we're being eaten.'
She walked out, and Marcus let her go. The ice in his glass had completely melted now. His iPhone buzzed—another email from legal, another fire to fight. He picked it up, thumb hovering over the screen, palm slick with sweat.
Outside, the city lights blurred through his tears, a million little pyramids reaching toward nothing at all.
