Pyramid at the Pool's Edge

The corporate pyramid loomed over Maya's thoughts as she floated in her sister's pool, the water cooling skin still hot from July's unrelenting sun. Her iPhone vibrated on the patio table—another email from David, the bullish CEO who'd built their company's hierarchy like a temple to his own ego. She'd stopped checking after the third 'urgent' message about projections she'd already submitted twice.

"You're going to prune," Clara called from the lounge chair, "floating like that." Her sister's husband had left her for a younger analyst three months ago. The family had taken sides. The pool had become Clara's refuge.

Maya kicked toward the edge. "Better than drowning."

"He's a bull, Maya. Always was. You can't reason with a charging animal."

She meant David, but Maya thought of Marcus—her ex, who'd texted her last night after six months of silence. She'd seen the notification glow on her iPhone screen through half-closed eyes at 2 AM. Something about how he'd changed, how they'd been rushing into things like idiots, like he hadn't been the one holding the ring in his pocket when she'd finally said 'I love you' for the first time.

"The pyramid scheme of love," Clara laughed bitterly, cracking open a Modelo. "Bottom tier feeds the top. Someone always loses."

Maya pulled herself onto the pool's edge, water streaming down her back. She picked up her iPhone. David's email sat unread next to Marcus's texts, both demanding responses she didn't have the energy to give. The corporate ladder and the relationship ladder—both pyramids, both requiring someone to climb over someone else to reach the top.

"Maybe," Maya said, dropping the phone back onto the concrete, "I just stop climbing."

Clara raised her beer. "To the bottom tier, then. Where the water's fine."

They sat in silence as the sun dipped toward the horizon, both wondering how they'd ended up thirty-something and drowning in the shallow end while everyone else seemed to be swimming laps in the deep.
