Poolside Zombies and Midnight Runs
I felt like a straight-up zombie. Fourth night in a row falling asleep at 2 AM scrolling through TikToks, and now here I was at Jessica's pool party, rocking the dark circles like designer accessories. The sun beat down on her backyard oasis—perfect blue water, expensive lounge chairs, the whole influencer aesthetic.
"You good, Maya?" Jessica asked, handing me a sparkling water. "You look, I don't know... undead?"
"Just living that junior year grind," I lied, taking a sip. Inside my head, I was screaming about how I'd spent the last hour frantically running through possible conversation starters, trying to figure out how to talk to Tyler without making it obvious I'd been low-key obsessed with him since biology lab.
Then Tyler emerged from the pool like something out of a movie. Water dripping, hair pushed back, that smile that made my brain turn to mush. He'd been swimming laps while everyone else just floated around on inflatables, being all athletic and disciplined.
"Maya!" He waved. "Come in, the water's perfect."
My social anxiety spiked. I'd barely packed a swimsuit, let alone planned for actually swimming. But then again, what was the worst that could happen? I'd look like a goofball? I'd been doing that since seventh grade.
So I did it—I just went for it. Kicked off my flip-flops, cannonballed into the pool, and emerged sputtering while everyone laughed. Tyler was right there grinning, and suddenly I wasn't the zombie-fied exhausted overthinker anymore. I was just Maya, finally taking a breath.
"Running from something?" he teased, splashing water.
"Nah," I said, splashing back. "Just running toward better vibes."
And honestly? The water felt amazing. The fake it 'til you make it thing actually worked for once. Sometimes you just gotta jump in—even when you're running on three hours of sleep and zero confidence.
