Poolside Zombies

Marcus pulled his snapback down lower, grateful for the extra inch of shade between his face and the blazing sun. His first real high school party. He'd spent three hours picking out this outfit, thirty minutes fixing his hair in the mirror, and approximately zero seconds feeling ready.

He felt like a straight-up zombie after staying up until 3 AM overthinking every possible social scenario. Now here he stood at the edge of the pool, clutching an orange soda like it was a lifeline, watching everyone else float and laugh and exist like normal human beings.

"Yo Marcus!" Jake called from the water. "Get in here, bro! The water's actually sick!"

Marcus hesitated. The pool looked amazing—crystal clear, surrounded by inflatable flamingos and a group of girls who definitely didn't spend their Friday nights mentally rehearsing conversation starters. But the thought of taking off his hat, revealing his hair that suddenly felt wrong, maybe accidentally showing the scar on his back from surgery last year...

"I'm good," Marcus said, his voice cracking slightly. Perfect.

Jake swam over, dripping wet. "Dude, you good? You look... I don't know, stiff?"

"Yeah, just chillin'." Marcus took a sip of his orange drink, suddenly aware he'd been holding it against his chest for twenty minutes.

His older sister's words echoed in his head: *Nobody's watching you as much as you think they are. Everyone's too busy worrying about themselves.*

Then he spotted the fruit tray on the patio table. Papaya chunks nestled between pineapple and watermelon. Nobody was eating them. Too exotic, too unfamiliar. Just like him.

Something shifted.

Marcus set his drink on a table, reached for a papaya chunk, and popped it into his mouth. Weird. But not bad. Different.

He took off his hat and dropped it on his chair. The sun hit his face directly. His hair was fine. His scar was just a scar. Jake was still waiting.

"Alright," Marcus said, sliding off his sandals. "I'm coming in."

"That's what I'm talking about!" Jake cheered.

The water was cold at first, then perfect. Marcus surfaced to find Jake grinning. "See? Not so scary."

Marcus laughed, actually laughed. The zombie feeling washed away with every ripple. He wasn't that kid on the edge anymore. He was just Marcus, in the pool, living it.
