Poolside Zombie Surveillance

poolspyzombie

The chlorine stung my nose as I hovered near the snack table, clutching my red Solo cup like a lifeline. Maya's end-of-summer pool party raged around me—bodies splashing in the **pool**, bass from Bluetooth speakers vibrating through the deck, laughter rising in waves I couldn't quite catch.

I felt like a **zombie**. Three nights of finals-week studying had turned my brain to mush, and social interaction required energy I simply didn't possess. But senior year started Monday, and this was the last bash before everything changed. I had to be here.

Then I saw him: Liam, my crush since seventh grade, emerging from the water with droplets sparkling on his tan shoulders. My stomach did that embarrassing flip-flop thing.

I became a **spy**. Not the cool kind with gadgets and glory—more like the awkward lurker kind, pretending to check my phone while actually watching every move he made. I tracked his trajectory: high-fived Jake, grabbed a slice of pizza, leaned against the pool fence where Maya's cousin Chloe was laughing at something he said.

Chloe, with her perfect hair and effortless popularity. Chloe, who probably didn't overthink every conversation or rehearse text messages in the mirror three times.

My phone buzzed. Best friend Sierra: Don't be a weirdo, just talk to him!!

Easier said than done.

Liam started walking toward me. MY HEART. I smoothed my hair, tried to look casual, possibly failed at both.

"Hey, you okay? You look... intense."

I blinked. He'd noticed me noticing him. The surveillance had been compromised.

"Just. Um. Thinking about school starting."

"Same. I'm freaking out about AP Calc." He splashed water from his hair. "Wanna get some air? This party's getting loud."

We ended up on the front porch steps, talking about everything and nothing until the sun set. The zombie feeling faded, replaced by something lighter. Maybe senior year wouldn't be so terrifying after all.

Sometimes the best things happen when you stop spying from the sidelines and just dive in.
