Poolside Vitamin
The water shimmered like crushed diamonds under the July sun, but Leo's stomach churned like a washing machine. Pool parties at Jessica Harper's house weren't just gatherings—they were social battlefield simulations where one wrong move could permanently relegate you to the loser tier for the rest of high school.
Leo adjusted his swim trunks for the tenth time. They were slightly too big, a hand-me-down from his cousin who'd apparently never heard of growth spurts. The pool smelled like chlorine and expensive sunscreen, the scent of popularity.
"Hey, Vitamin Boy!"
Leo froze. That was Tyler's voice—Tyler, the varsity swimmer with abs that looked like they were chiseled from marble. The nickname came from last week when Leo's mom had busted into the cafeteria waving his gummy vitamin supplements like they were contraband. The incident had achieved legendary status in three periods flat.
"Sup, Tyler," Leo managed, throat tight.
"You jumping in or just gonna stand there looking like you're about to cry?" Tyler and his friends snickered.
Before Leo could respond, a Golden Retriever burst through the back gate, barking like it had just won the lottery. Mrs. Harper's prize-winning marigolds didn't stand a chance.
"MAX!" someone screamed.
The dog—clearly named Max, because apparently basic dog names were a thing—made a beeline for the pool. People scattered. Leo, paralyzed by indecision and basic survival instinct, became the human landing pad.
Sixty pounds of wet fur slammed into him, and suddenly Leo was airborne. He hit the water in an ungraceful cannonball that displaced approximately half the pool onto the concrete deck.
Underwater, everything muffled into peaceful silence. Then strong hands grabbed his arms, hauling him up.
"DUDE," Tyler was actually laughing, but not the mean kind. "You just got TACKLED by a dog. That was EPIC."
Leo surfaced, spluttering, hair plastered to his forehead like seaweed. The dog sat on the pool edge, tail thumping, looking ridiculously proud of itself.
"Is everyone okay?" Jessica Harper appeared, looking concerned.
"Vitamin Boy here just got owned by Max!" Tyler announced. "Someone get that dog a treat!"
Something shifted. The nickname didn't sting anymore—it was just funny. Because getting tackled by a random dog was objectively hilarious, and refusing to swim after that would be worse than any embarrassment.
Leo treaded water, grinning. "Next time? I'm jumping in first."
The dog barked like it understood. And somehow, impossibly, Leo Vitamins had just become Leo Who Got Tackled By A Dog At Jessica Harper's Pool Party—which was definitely a step up.
Sometimes social survival wasn't about being cool. It was about being the person who could laugh when life literally knocked you into the deep end.
