Poolside undercover

hatspypadelpool

Maya's fedora pulled low over her eyes, the brim creating a shadow that felt like armor against the judgment waiting at Tyler's pool party. This wasn't just any hat — it was her dad's, stolen from his closet because it made her feel like someone else. Someone cooler.

The party already hummed with life. Kids she'd known since middle school clustered around the **pool**, their laughter echoing off the water. Maya hovered near the fence, heart hammering. This was it. The summer before sophomore year, when everyone was supposedly becoming their "real selves." Maya didn't even know what that meant anymore.

She spotted them immediately: the Padel Court Crew, wearing matching pastel polo shirts and sporting fresh fades. They dominated the **padel** court near the pool house, calling out shots in a language of inside jokes Maya didn't understand. Last month, she'd barely known what padel was — now it was everything.

"Yo, Maya!" Tyler waved from the deep end. "Get in here!"

Her fingers twitched at her hat brim. Just then she noticed Chloe, the queen bee of the padel crew, watching her from the pool edge. Something in Chloe's gaze made Maya's stomach flip.

That's when she saw it: Chloe's phone, angled like she was recording. Then Chloe's friend Emma did the same thing. They weren't just watching — they were documenting. Like Maya was some kind of experiment, a specimen under glass.

Were they **spy**ing on her? Was this a joke?

Suddenly, Chloe marched over, water dripping from her bikini, and grabbed Maya's wrist.

"Come on," Chloe said.

"What—"

"You're playing padel with us."

Maya froze. "I don't know how."

"Duh." Chloe actually rolled her eyes, but not meanly. "Nobody does. We just started learning last week. We've been waiting for you to show up because you're actually good at sports in gym class, unlike the rest of us who fake it."

The phone cameras lowered.

"Wait, you were recording me because... you wanted me on your team?"

"We weren't recording, we were texting," Chloe laughed. "About how cute you look in that hat, by the way. Very noir detective vibe."

Maya's hand went to the fedora. She could take it off now.

Nah.

"So," Chloe asked, "you gonna destroy us at padel or what?"

Maya grinned, tilting the brim lower. "Oh, I'm absolutely destroying you."

The best part? She actually did.
