Poolside Truth or Dare

palmswimmingcablebullpool

The lifeguard cable stretched across the pool area like a warning, dividing the shallow end from the deep end where the cool kids hung out. I'd been avoiding the deep end all summer—literally and metaphorically.

"You're not actually gonna do it," Marcus said, grinning that arrogant grin that made half the school want to be him and the other half want to punch him. He was full of bull today, as usual, bragging about how he'd totally make the varsity team this year.

I looked at my palm—sweaty, obviously—and then at the pool. The dare was simple: swim to the other side underwater without coming up for air. Simple for anyone who wasn't me.

"Watch me."

Before I could overthink it, I slid into the water. The shock of cold against my skin was familiar—I'd spent every summer since I was six in this pool, but never in the deep end. Never where **they** were.

I kicked off, diving beneath the surface. The world went muffled and blue, my heartbeat loud in my ears. Marcus's laughter, the splashing, the gossip—gone. Just me and the water, cutting through.

My lungs burned. Keep going. Almost there.

I surfaced gasping, water streaming down my face. Everyone was watching. Even **her**—Maya from my English class, drying her hair by the palm tree, actually looking impressed.

"Not bad," she said.

"Not terrible," I managed back, trying to play it cool while my heart still hammered.

Marcus rolled his eyes. "Whatever. Maya, truth or dare?"

She glanced at me, then at him. "Truth."

"Who's your crush?"

The pool went silent. Even the water seemed to hold its breath.

Maya's eyes met mine across the water. "I plead the fifth," she said, but she was smiling.

Later, sitting on the edge with our feet in the water, she nudged me. "You know what? That swim was actually kinda brave."

"I was literally just trying not to drown."

"Same difference." She stood up. "Same time tomorrow?"

"Only if you go to the deep end with me this time."

"Deal."

I watched her walk away, palm trees swaying behind her. Maybe some risks were worth taking. Maybe the deep end wasn't so scary after all.
