Poolside Truth Games

The pool lights flickered blue against chlorine-scented air. Maya leaned against the chain-link fence, heart hammering like she'd just finished laps instead of just standing there watching him.

"You gonna swim or what?" called Jordan, slicing through the water with that effortless grace that made everything look stupidly easy. Senior year started in three weeks, and Maya was still the girl who hid in oversized hoodies at pool parties.

"Maybe," she muttered, fingers twisting around the wire fence.

Behind her, someone snorted. "Bullshit."

Maya spun around. Chloe stood there, arms crossed, that annoying cat-who-ate-the-canary grin plastered across her face. The same Chloe who'd been spreading rumors about Maya's crush on Jordan since eighth grade.

"Excuse me?" Maya's voice came out smaller than she wanted.

"You're not gonna swim. You never do." Chloe stepped closer. "But here's the thing—Jordan's totally into you. He's been asking about you all summer. But you're too busy being..." She waved a hand vaguely at Maya's oversized t-shirt and cutoffs. "This."

Maya's face burned. "He's WHAT?"

"Swear on my life. My cousin's his swim teammate. They've been talking about you at practice." Chloe's expression shifted, something almost genuine breaking through. "But you gotta give him something to work with, Maya. You're practically invisible out here."

A splash echoed as Jordan pulled himself from the pool, water droplets tracing down his arms. Maya's stomach did that sick lurchy thing it always did when he was nearby.

Chloe leaned in close. "Your move, girl. Either jump in or get out of the water."

Maya's fingers trembled as she stripped off her hoodie. Her swimsuit underneath wasn't anything special—black one-piece, practical—but her skin practically glowed under the pool lights.

She walked to the edge. Jordan looked up, water dripping from his hair, and something in his face changed. Something that looked exactly like hope.

"Finally decided to join us?" he called.

Maya took a deep breath and dove.

The water swallowed her whole. For a second, everything was muffled and blue and perfect. Then she broke the surface, gasping, and Jordan was right there, grinning like she'd just handed him the world.

"Took you long enough," he said.

Chloe watched from the fence, looking weirdly proud. Maya treaded water, heart still racing but for a totally different reason now. She'd spent sixteen years terrified of being seen. Turns out, all she'd needed to do was jump in.
