Poolside Truth Game
Maya's hair frizzed in the humidity like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Again. She smoothed it down for the seventeenth time, but the Michigan summer air had other plans.
"You look fine, stop spiraling," whispered Chloe, nudging her elbow. But Chloe wasn't the one about to play truth or death with her crush sitting three pool chairs away.
The pool shimmered below them, a blue invitation to cool off or maybe to drown her dignity. Either way.
This was supposed to be a chill hang with her friend group, but then Jake had shown up with that annoyingly perfect smile and hair that actually behaved itself. Now Maya's stomach was doing backflips that felt suspiciously like anxiety.
"Truth or death?" Chloe asked, grinning like she knew exactly what she was doing.
"Truth," Maya said, because she was absolutely not doing a death dare in front of Jake. No thanks.
"Who's your crush?"
Maya's face burned hotter than the asphalt around the pool. She could feel Jake watching her now, actually looking at her for the first time all afternoon. The water lapped against the pool edges, rhythmic and unforgiving.
She was going to kill Chloe. Actual murder.
"Uh..." Maya's brain scrambled like eggs. "I don't... really... have one?"
Chloe gasped so dramatically that three people turned around. Jake's eyebrows shot up.
"Liar!" Chloe practically shouted. "I literally saw you spy on Jake's Instagram story for like twenty minutes last night!"
Silence dropped over their friend group like a cartoon anvil. Maya's entire life flashed before her eyes, and it was mostly just her doing embarrassing things in front of people she wanted to impress.
Then Jake started laughing. Not mean laughing—like, actual genuine laughing.
"Wait, you spy on my stories?" He pushed his sunglasses up. "That's actually kind of cute."
Maya's face was so red she could probably guide ships to shore. "I don't spy! I just... occasionally check. Like a normal person."
"Uh-huh." Jake stood up, dripping water everywhere like some Greek statue come to life. "Well, for the record, I check your stories too. And not in a spy way. More like... an interested way."
Chloe mouthed YOU'RE WELCOME behind his back, and Maya realized something: maybe having friends who orchestrated your total humiliation wasn't the worst thing in the world. Not when it ended like this.
