Poolside Transformation

Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, fingers running through her freshly dyed blue hair. It looked sick, actually—exactly the vibe she wanted for Jordan's pool party. But her stomach did that nervous flip-flop thing it always did before social events.

"You ready?" her mom called from downstairs.

"Yeah, coming!" Maya grabbed her towel, phone, and the cheap goldfish earrings she'd thrifted—little orange fish that dangled from silver hooks.

Outside, Jordan's house was already bumping with music and laughter. Maya texted her best friend Chloe: u here yet??

Chloe replied instantly: otw!! walker is driving 🙄 so might be a minute

The pool area was packed with people from sophomore year. Jordan's golden retriever, Buster, zoomed around the deck, causing chaos. Maya stepped onto the concrete, trying to look chill while scanning for familiar faces.

"Maya! Finally!" Jordan waved from the pool edge. "Get in here, the water's actually fire."

Maya dipped her toe in. Okay, yeah, it felt amazing. She slid into the pool, the cool water washing away her anxiety. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

Then she saw him. Ethan.

Of course Ethan would be swimming shirtless, looking like he belonged in a TikTok thirst trap. Maya had been lowkey crushing on him since biology class, when he'd helped her with that punnett square worksheet without making her feel stupid.

"Yo Maya!" Ethan swam over. "Your hair looks awesome, by the way. Like, actually so cool."

Wait, was he being genuine or was that just polite? Maya couldn't tell.

"Thanks!" she said, probably too loud. "Just dyed it yesterday."

"Bold move." Ethan grinned. "I like it. Not everyone could pull that off."

Before Maya could respond, something brushed against her leg underwater. Something furry.

She SCREAMED and practically leaped out of the water.

Everyone stopped. The music kept playing but conversations halted. Maya stood there, dripping wet, heart racing.

"What? What happened?" Chloe rushed over.

"Something... touched my leg!"

Jordan's cat, Mittens, sat on the pool edge looking completely unbothered, paw dripping wet. The cat had been drinking from the pool and apparently decided to take a swim.

"Oh my god," Maya said, her face heating up. "I thought it was like... I don't know, something else."

Ethan was laughing—not mean laughing, but genuine cracking up. "That's literally my cat. She loves water. Mittens is built different."

The tension broke. Everyone was laughing now, Maya included. Maybe this was embarrassing, but somehow it made things easier. The ice was broken.

Later, wrapped in a towel watching the sunset, Maya found herself sitting next to Ethan.

"So," he said. "Besides almost dying from Mittens attack, you having a good time?"

Maya smiled. "Actually? Yeah. It's been pretty sick."

"Good." Ethan nudged her shoulder. "Hey, want to hang out sometime? Outside of school?"

Maya's heart did that flip-flop thing again—but this time, it didn't feel so bad. "Yeah. I'd like that."
