Poolside Transformation

waterhairzombiepool

Maya stood at the edge of the **pool**, her heart pounding like she'd just downed three energy shots. The sophomore spring fling. The event that could make or break your entire social existence. And she was about to cannonball into it with wet, frizzy **hair** because the universe clearly had it out for her.

"You got this, bestie," Chloe whispered, but her eyes were already scanning the crowd for Jake. Typical.

Maya's curls were already rebelling against the humidity, and she'd spent forty-five minutes this morning trying to tame them into something presentable. Now she looked like a **zombie** who'd survived the apocalypse but not the humidity index. Because apparently that's what three hours of sleep plus AP Bio final plus your straightener dying mid-way through getting ready does to you.

The **water** glittered like something out of a teen drama, all blue and perfect and mocking. Everyone else looked so effortless—so naturally amazing without even trying. Meanwhile, Maya felt like she was constantly swimming upstream, trying to be someone she wasn't.

"Maya! You coming in or what?" Jake called from the pool. Jake. Who was, like, actually cute in that way that made your brain short-circuit.

Something in her shifted. Maybe it was sleep deprivation. Maybe it was finally realizing that nobody actually cared about her hair as much as she did. Or maybe she was just too tired to keep overthinking everything.

She jumped.

The **water** shocked her senses, washing away the insecurities she'd been carrying all day. When she surfaced, sputting and definitely not graceful, Jake was laughing. But not like mean-girl laughing—like, actually laughing with her.

"Finally!" he said, splashing her. "We were wondering when Zombie Maya would wake up and join the party."

Her hair was ruined. Her makeup was gone. And somehow, she'd never felt more like herself. Sometimes the best transformations happen when you stop trying so hard and just cannonball into life anyway.
