Poolside Surveillance

zombiespyswimming

Practice had ended two hours ago, but Maya was still at the pool, fingers shriveled like raisins, body moving through autopilot laps. She felt like a zombie—exhausted from finals week, brain foggy as chlorine fog. The pool was her sanctuary, the only place where college applications and GPAs couldn't touch her.

Then she saw him.

Liam, the boy she'd been crushing on since September, was sitting on the bleachers in street clothes. Not swimming. Just watching.

Maya's heart did that annoying flutter thing. She pretended not to notice, swimming with renewed purpose, secretly hoping her form looked effortless instead of desperate. But after twenty minutes, something felt off. Liam wasn't looking at her. He was looking at his phone, typing rapidly, then glancing at the pool exit.

He was waiting for someone.

Maya swam to the ladder and hoisted herself out, dripping wet, suddenly self-conscious in her Speedo. She grabbed her towel and moved toward the locker room entrance, positioning herself so she could still see the bleaters.

That's when she saw: another girl walking toward Liam. Sophia, from her AP Bio class. The prettiest girl in school. They met, exchanged something small, and then—

They started kissing.

Maya froze. Zombie exhaustion vanished, replaced by sharp, crystal clarity. She'd been swimming in circles, literally and metaphorically, all while Liam had been seeing someone else. She wasn't the main character in this story. She wasn't even the supporting character. She was just extra.

Maya turned back to the pool. One more lap. One more zombie swim through chlorinated water, moving through the motions because sometimes that's all you could do. Tomorrow she'd feel differently. Tonight, she'd just keep swimming until the water washed everything away.
