Poolside Surveillance

The chlorine smell hit me before I even saw the water. Jake's end-of-school pool party. The invite list had been circulating all week, and somehow, I'd made the cut.

I positioned myself in a corner chair, sunglasses on, pretending to scroll through my phone. Classic spy technique—observe everything, look at nothing. Across the pool, Jake emerged from the water, droplets running down his arms. I adjusted my sunglasses, glad for the cover.

"Hey, Maya!" Jake called. "You coming in?"

"Maybe later," I lied. My swimsuit felt too tight. Everyone else looked like they'd stepped out of a magazine. I felt like a zombie from one of those marathons I binged with my dad—dead inside, just going through the motions.

Then I saw Tyler, this senior who'd been giving Jake grief all semester, gesturing toward my chair. He leaned toward his friends, laughing. My stomach clenched. I knew that look. I'd been bearing the weight of their whispers since middle school.

But then Jake splashed water directly at Tyler's face.

"That's bull, man," Jake said, grinning. "Leave her alone."

The moment hung there, suspended. Tyler blinked, wiped water from his eyes, and actually laughed. "Alright, alright. My bad."

Jake swam over to my corner. "You okay?"

"Yeah," I said, and something shifted. "Actually, yeah."

"Good." He held up a water gun. "Because you're about to get wet."

I laughed, and for the first time all day, I didn't think about how I looked or who was watching. I just grabbed a water gun and joined the game.
