Poolside Surveillance

Margaret stood by the hotel pool, her sweaty palms pressing against the cold glass of her gin and tonic. The corporate retreat had been her idea—suggested during that moment when she'd felt invincible, before she discovered someone was feeding competitor information to the press.

Now she watched them laugh. Jason from accounting, with his perfect teeth and too-casual charm. The new VP, Elena, whose brilliance Margaret had admired until the leaks started. They were goldfish in an open bowl, unaware of the net descending.

She'd hired the spy three weeks ago. A private investigator who'd given her photos of document exchanges, late-night meetings, the trail of breadcrumbs leading to someone trusted. But the identity remained just out of reach, like trying to catch water with cupped hands.

Margaret's therapist had prescribed vitamin D supplements for her stress, told her to take time by the water. So here she was, surrounded by palm trees swaying in the artificial breeze, watching colleagues she might have to destroy to save the company she'd built from nothing.

Elena approached, pool water dripping from her designer swimsuit. "You're missing the team-building exercise, Margaret."

"Building." Margaret smiled thinly. "Not dismantling."

"Everything's eventually dismantled." Elena's eyes held something ancient, weary. "Better to control how it falls."

The truth hit Margaret like cold water. Elena wasn't the spy—she was the warning. Margaret set down her drink, palms suddenly steady. The spy was closer than she'd imagined. The dismantling had already begun.

She watched the goldfish swimming lazily in the pool's decorative fountain, innocent to everything beyond their tiny world. Tomorrow, she would break some hearts. Tonight, she'd finish her drink and let them all pretend they weren't already drowning.
