Poolside Static
Marcus stood behind the concession counter, sweat dripping down his neck as he restocked the cooler for the third time that shift. The community pool buzzed with summer chaos—kids screaming, lifeguards whistling, and the distant thump of bass from someone's phone. It was his first real job, and honestly? He was lowkey regretting it.
"Yo Marcus, my man!" called Tyrell, sliding up to the counter shirtless with chlorine in his hair. "Hook me up with that orange Fanta, yeah?"
Marcus grabbed the bottle, trying to look casual even though his hands were shaking. Tyrell was everything he wasn't: confident, athletic, apparently totally comfortable being shirtless in public. Meanwhile, Marcus was still trying to figure out if he was supposed to shave his upper lip or what.
"Three fifty," Marcus said, his voice cracking mid-sentence. Perfect.
Across the pool, he saw Her. Skylar. The girl who'd moved here in March and had somehow captured everyone's attention without trying. She was lounging on one of the plastic chairs with her friends, orange nail polish gleaming in the sun. Every time she laughed, Marcus felt like his entire body short-circuited. It was pathetic, really. He was fifteen and still didn't know how to talk to girls without sounding like a complete loser.
The worst part? His parents had finally gotten cable last week. Like, actual cable TV with all the channels everyone else had had since forever. Marcus had missed every pop culture reference for years because they'd had rabbit ears antenna and four channels total. Now he was finally catching up on everyone's favorite shows, but he was still hopelessly behind on everything else.
That night, lying in bed and scrolling through texts he was too nervous to send, Marcus grabbed Mr. Grizzly from his nightstand. The stuffed bear had been his since kindergarten, and he knew he should've gotten rid of it years ago. But whatever. Some things were harder to let go of than childhood toys—like being the only one in your friend group who still hadn't had their first kiss, or the only person whose parents couldn't afford Disney World.
His phone buzzed. Unknown number.
"hey this is skylar from the pool lol tyrell gave me ur number"
Marcus sat up so fast he knocked Mr. Grizzly off the bed. What. WHAT.
"u got the orange soda today btw it was clutch :))"
Three seconds later, another text: "u working tomorrow?"
Marcus stared at his phone, heart racing like he'd just finished swimming laps across the entire pool. Sometimes the most unexpected things happened when you least expected them. And sometimes, just sometimes, being yourself was actually enough.
